How Many Baby Clothes Do You Need?

Is it better to have five or fifty bodysuits? Here's how to figure out how many baby clothes you should put on your registry.

It's difficult for many pregnant women to resist adding a million baby outfits to their registry. (Small booties! Hats with a top knot! Avocado ninjas! (Do you get what we're saying?)

On the one hand, messes happen—a lot—and having a variety of outfit options for quick changes might be useful. On the other hand, babies develop quickly, and your baby won't be able to stay in one size for long.

So, how many outfits does your baby really require?

How to Make a Wardrobe for Your Baby

When determining how much baby items you'll need and how to add clothing to your registry, there are a few items to keep in mind.

  1. Doing the laundry

The number of items of baby clothing you'll need depends on your access to laundry (and how often you actually do it).Our list of newborn essentials below assumes you do a few loads of laundry throughout the week. If this isn’t the case, though, you may need more or less clothing. Here’s how to adjust:

  • If you’re only planning on doing laundry once a week, multiply the numbers below by two.
  • If you will be doing laundry every day, cut the numbers below in half.

  1. Dimensions

It's difficult to predict how big your baby will be at birth and how quickly they'll grow, so determining sizing and how many things in each size to add to your registry can be difficult. Keep the following suggestions in mind:

Consider the broad picture:  Because most newborn sizes top out at roughly eight pounds, if you have a larger baby, you may need to start with 0-3 months sizes. (And if they're small, they'll probably only fit into newborn sizes for a few weeks anyhow.) Choose a few newborn things before concentrating on 0-3 months, as these outfits will fit babies weighing up to 12 or 13 pounds.

  1. Maintain your organization

Clothing for teeny-tiny babies is adorable, but it's also easy to lose sight of. The easiest method to know what fits right now and what you have available in the following size when the time comes are to organize your baby's wardrobe by size.

Drawer dividers are a wonderful investment if you store most of your baby's items in a dresser. They can be organized by garment type, size, or any other way you like (we're looking at you, tiny baby socks) and help keep everything in one place.

Check out closet dividers if you're storing your child's clothes in a closet. These small, robust hanging signs categories clothing by size (this set includes sizes from newborn to adult).
